Skip the queues here’s how to get your Smart ID quickly through participating banks.
South Africans applying for a smart ID card now have 66 bank branches to choose from, including the first branches in the Free State and North West Provinces.
The Department of Home Affairs’ expanded digital partnership programme with major banks kicked off this week, overshooting the target of 17 new bank branches.
Instead, the combined expansion at Standard Bank and Capitec resulted in smart ID services rolling out to 34 new bank branches.
This more than doubled the 32 bank branches at which the older partnership model stagnated, demonstrating the new model’s potential for the rapid expansion of smart ID services.
The Department of Home Affairs first launched an online system that let South Africans apply for a smart ID card or passport through its eHomeAffairs pilot in April 2016.
This partnership model, initially supported by Absa, FNB, Nedbank, and Standard Bank, and later by Discovery Bank and Investec, required placing Home Affairs staff and equipment in bank branches.
Since this was an expensive exercise, the number of bank branches supporting these services stagnated at 32.
Moreover, while many users initially praised the eHomeAffairs platform for its convenience, it struggled to keep up with demand over the years.
Home Affairs minister Leon Schreiber announced the launch of a new, digital partnership model in August 2025, to which nine South African banks have signed on.
These include Absa, African Bank, Capitec, Discovery Bank, FNB, Nedbank, Standard Bank, TymeBank, and Old Mutual Bank.
Capitec and Standard Bank have gone live with their first new bank branches supporting smart ID services under the new partnership model this week.
Schreiber said these new rollouts mark an important step in restoring dignity to how South Africans access identity documents.
The initiative forms part of the broader “Home Affairs @ Home” strategy, which aims to expand smart ID services through trusted institutions connected directly to its digital systems.
New branches balloon from 17 to 34

On 12 March 2026 Schreiber said the initial rollout of new smart ID bank branches in the week starting Monday, 9 March, was far more extensive than initially planned.
The department expected 17 new bank branches to launch this week, comprising four from Standard Bank and 13 from Capitec.
While Standard Bank delivered on its numbers, Capitec rolled out smart ID services across 30 branches, far exceeding its planned 13.
“While our aim at Home Affairs was to have 17 branches live this week, Home Affairs over-performed by 100% with 34 branches now live in all nine provinces,” Schreiber said.
Standard Bank launched two new branches on Monday and planned to launch two more on Thursday, 12 March. The majority of the new branches have come from Capitec.
Capitec initially planned to roll out its self-service smart ID kiosks to seven branches on Monday, 9 March, followed by another six by Friday, 13 March, for a total of 13.
However, its expansion has been far greater than expected. Moreover, it is the first bank to offer smart ID services at branches in the Free State and the North West.
Capitec says customers who apply for a smart ID at its kiosks can do so in under five minutes. The table below lists all bank branches in South Africa at which citizens can apply for the smart ID card.
